Recommended Use

Serving size = 1000mg (½ teaspoon). Three serves (3 grams of HMB) is recommended daily to be takenwith food. Alternatively one serve may be taken in the morning followed by two serves two hours before exercise.

Precautions / Contra-indications

To date, short-term studies have not shown any adverse side effects of HMB in humans, when taken in the recommended dosage range.

Pregnant or lactating women should not take HMB supplements without medical advice.


Mode of Action

HMB (ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate) is a natural compound produced in the body, derived from the branched-chain amino acid, leucine. A portion of the leucine within the skeletal muscles is metabolised into the intermediary product, -ketoisocaproate (KIC) via transanimation. The enzyme Dioxygenase converts KIC into HMB in the cytosolic compartment.

Approximately 5% of the Leucine in the body each day is converted to HMB producing about 0.2 to 0.4 g of HMB a day in a 70 Kg individual.

The general theory is that HMB reduces or prevents protein breakdown, and it on this premise that HMB has become a popular dietary supplement for bodybuilders and other athletes who are trying to increase lean body mass and muscle strength.
